LARGE ANIMALS: Cattle, Sheep and Goats

WHAT CAUSES EYE INFECTIONS IN PRODUCTION LIVESTOCK?

Infectious Kerato-conjunctivitis (IBK or “Pink Eye”, ”New Forest Disease”) in cattle, sheep, and goats is a common eye condition characterized by conjunctivitis, corneal opacity and ulceration. In severe cases eye rupture leading to blindness can result.
IBK , or Pink Eye as it is commonly, known presents as a “bluish” cloudy appearance in the eye. Most eye infections are noted on the basis of tear-staining of the eye lashes and head. The eye lesions are very painful and can disrupt grazing patterns causing reduced water and feed intake which can result in weight loss and reduced performance.

Affected animals can present at any age, but younger animals are most commonly affected. The disease can occur at any time of year, with outbreaks mostly in warmer seasons when risk factor exposure is greatest.

Infectious Bovine Kerato-conjunctivitis is caused by Moraxella bovis bacterium that infects the eye by producing a toxin.

Although Moraxella bovis has long been considered to be the etiologic agent of IBK, other species of Moraxella such as M bovoculi, M ovis and various Mycoplasma species (M bovis and M bovoculi) are known to be causes of eye infections and disease.

KEY CAUSAL FACTORS OF IBK , (OR PINK EYE) , INCLUDE:

Direct Sunlight
Flies and Insects
Dust , pollen and plant particles
Foreign Body Irritation(ie Grass, trees)
Bacterial Infection agents
Recent commingling via transport, auctions, shows

HOW DOES EYEBAC WORK?

EYEBAC is 100% natural bacterial eyewash solution extracted from virgin soil organic carbons and naturally occurring bacteria. It acts as a powerful anti-pathogenic agent, and intrinsically attacks the Moraxella Bovis bacterium toxins and its variations that cause eye infections and disease.

EYEBAC is safe for use on animals with no side effects or withdrawal symptoms.

EYEBAC BEST PRACTICE APPLICATION:

1. Shake the EYEBAC bottle well prior to use.
2. Mix a 3% solution of EYEBAC and water in a spray bottle and make sure it is very well mixed.( Shake well.) ie 3ml (1/2 - 1 teaspoon) in a 100ml Spray bottle
3. Wait 15 minutes after mixing before spraying to allow EYEBAC to activate in water.
4. Spray gently over the infected eye and surrounding area.
• Only need to Wet the area lightly.
• Ensure the eye is fully washed with EYEBAC.
5. Apply Daily for a few days until eye improves
6. You can use the same mixture in the Spray bottle for 3 days – shake bottle well before each use
7. After 3 days discard and mix a new solution
8. In case of bad infections it is suggested to also use ANIPROBIOTIC orally or in feed or water
a. It is molasses based for ease of use.
b. 5ml(1 x Teaspoon) mixed well in water and administered orally by syringe or in
feed/water
c. 2 - 3 x per week until infection symptoms improve

• 2 Applications should be sufficient but in case of severe infection apply on alternate days until the eye has fully healed

The above treatment is painless and least stressful for the animal. Results will be visible in the
first twenty-four hours - with full recovery within four days depending on severity of infection.
For prevention of eye infections it is suggested to spray the eyes of younger stock in hotter
seasons, or when early indications of eye infections are noted in the herd.
